Guanacaste is the northwest province of Costa Rica boasting an abundance of breathtaking natural wonders like lagoons, volcanic formations, thermal springs, and of course otherworldly waterfalls. Scientists discovered that the negative ions that are emitted when water molecules collide create a sense of euphoria, making waterfalls one of the most romantic destinations for couples around the world. This particular region is popular among locals and tourists alike, and for good reason. Check out our list of the top four most romantic waterfalls to experience in Costa Rica with your husband or wife.

Cataratas Llanos de Cortez

This waterfall should be on your shortlist to visit during your couples retreat trip. Located in Bagaces, Guanacaste it is only 22 miles from Liberia International Airport and one of the cheapest day trips you can make. Because of this it is very popular with locals, so plan to go early if you want to avoid the crowds.  These falls are a little less than an hour drive from Playa Hermosa where you will be staying during the Imago couples therapy retreat making it an extremely convenient day trip.

Romantic Cataratas Llanos de Cortez Waterfall Costa Rica

You can take the bus to the parking area but the best way to get there is by car, and you will not need a 4×4 because the roads are in good condition. However, once you park and pay the “donation” inside the security station you will still need to walk 3 to 5 minutes across a foot bridge to get to the falls. Trust us, it’s worth it!

Expect to pay between $3 and $7 per person to enter the waterfall area and swim in the surrounding pools. Make sure you bring sunglasses, sunscreen, towels, flip flops, snacks, water, and a change of clothes for the hike back to your car. While the security station does not sell drinks or snacks, they do have real bathrooms (not portables) that are in good condition.

Bonus! If you happen to be there in October or November, you might get to see a second seasonal waterfall to the right of the main one. Look out for the smaller one, it’s amazing.

This tour lasts 3 to 4 hours and also has an observation platform where you can experience an aerial view of the rainforest, volcano, and Nicaragua lake below. This is a sensory tour, and it will stimulate all of your senses in a magical way. Viento Fresco Waterfalls

Viento Fresco is not a single waterfall; it is a series of five stunning waterfalls that require moderate physical exertion over the course of a few hours. If you’re up for the challenge and you have comfortable hiking boots and abilities, it is worth every step! The Viento Fresco Waterfalls area located halfway between two of Costa Rica’s most popular tourist destinations; Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and La Fortuna near the active Arenal Volcano.

These falls are only about a 2 hour drive from Playa Hermosa where the couples therapy retreat venue is held. This makes Viento Fresco Waterfalls an ideal destination for adventurous couples who want to make the most of their excursion day. If you plan on driving to the small restaurant where you pay the $16 to enter the area and experience the romantic waterfalls we highly recommend renting a four wheel drive vehicle or elevated AWD SUV.

The five waterfalls you can experience here include the Serena River, Hidden Falls, Rainbow Waterfall, Slide Waterfall, and The Rock Waterfall. There are changing rooms at the slide (4th) waterfall, we recommend taking a dip here to cool off and refresh. Read more about the romantic waterfalls from a local here.

La Piedra del Indio Waterfall

Just like Viento Fresco Waterfalls La Piedra del Indio Waterfall is close to Tilaran and a two-hour drive from the marriage retreat venue at Playa Hermosa. Also like Viento Fresco, it is not one but a series of four breathtaking waterfalls you can experience on a guided hike a little less than half a mile in the majestic highlands of the dry Costa Rican jungle.

La Fortuna Waterfall Costa Rica

Again, we encourage 4WD vehicles if you’re going to drive there yourself. You have the option to take a 1.5 to 2 hour hike through the waterfall trails for $25 per person, or ride horseback through the tour for 3 hours for $55.

You can even view petroglyphs carved into the mountains by our ancestors and (hopefully) our exotic wildlife including howler monkeys, toucans, armadillos, pacas, agoutis, sloths, and more. What an incredible trip to experience with your partner! To book a tour contact the owners of the property directly at lapiedradelindiowaterfalls.com.
